The New York Knicks entered the 2019 summer with a lot of ambition. One ofthe biggest markets in the NBA had a ton of cap space, and there were a bunch ofexceptional free agents looking for a new team.The expectations were high, and Knicks fans were buzzing.Fast-forward a couple of months, and the franchise somehow looks to be in adirer situation than last season. After years of failure, the Knicks weresupposed to transform into a contender, attracting guys like Kyrie Irving andKevin Durant.Instead, the best they could get was Julius Randle. The most notable new member of the Knicks rosteris Julius Randle, who got a contract worth over $60 million over the next threeyears.I believe this is an excellent deal for both the player and the team inprinciple, but the Knicks needed more. Randle is not ready to be a franchiseplayer, and the organization desperately needed a true superstar.Another guy that could do well with the Knicks is Marcus Morris. All of them could play a role for the upcoming season,and they bring depth to the bench, but they don’t address the main issues of theKnicks.The lack of talent in this roster is obvious, and the team didn’t do enoughto solve their problem this summer. The 2019-20 season will most likely becomeanother lost year for the New York Knicks in terms of results, but there aresome signs of a meaningful rebuilding process. New York Knicks 2019-20 Offense AnalysisLet’s start the New York Knicks analysis with the offensive potential of theteam. Julius Randle should be the key piece here, as the power forward managedover 20 points on efficient splits for the Pelicans last season.He had his first solid campaign from downtown and improved his free throwpercentage. If Randle can take another step up or at least keep the same level,he should comfortably provide more than 20 points per game in 2019-20.The Knicks’ starting backcourt duo will most likely include Dennis Smith Jr.and R.J. Both have enormous potential and should contribute more than10 points per game each, but I don’t think they will be efficient.Another problem with those two is that neither of the guys is that good of aplaymaker. They can create shots for others every now and then, but not at thelevel you would expect from a starting NBA backcourt.If you add the limited potential of Mitchell Robinson, who’s a good rebounderand defender but lacks offensive skills, the Knicks will obviously struggle.Some of the new signings like Marcus Morris, Bobby Portis, Reggie Bullock,and Taj Gibson can certainly help, as all of them are decent offensive players,while Kevin Knox has the potential to improve this season.
That won’t be nearlyenough, though.The team lacks superstars, and the starting lineup will feature young playersthat will be inefficient because they are in the process of learning andadapting to the NBA.Even if Julius Randle thrives as the first option and scores more than 25points per game on good splits, the franchise still lacks sufficient bigcontributors. The Knicks’ offense will most certainly be below average in theupcoming season.On the bright side, the likes of Barrett, Kevin Knox, Dennis Smith Jr., andMitchell Robinson will have the chance to improve for the near future. New York Knicks 2019-20 Defense AnalysisThe situation on the defensive end is not much different. Center MitchellRobinson is a solid rim protector, but none of the other potential starters areabove-average defenders.
